Kathleen Lloyd: Fulfilling a desire to travel & create

This interest rekindled my desire to be taught the skills and techniques I had missed out on at 16 and led me to applying for a place in Carmarthen College of Art to embark on a BA in textiles at the age of 58 years old.

I left school at 16 years old knowing my greatest achievement there was in Art and Crafts. Unfortunately Art College was not an option for me at that time and I embarked on a career of administration before starting a family. After my family grew up I trained to be an addiction counsellor. This was an extremely rewarding field to work in both from a work satisfaction perceptive and self awareness. From a greater understanding of myself I recognised my unfulfilled desire to travel and create was being neglected.

After embarking on a couple of lone journeys abroad, from around the age of 50 years old, I found myself wanting to understand at a deeper level the culture and art of the indigenous people I met in those countries. This interest rekindled my desire to be taught the skills and techniques I had missed out on at 16 and led me to applying for a place in Carmarthen College of Art to embark on a BA in textiles at the age of 58 years old.

While undertaking my degree I have travelled to Australia to volunteer at a Northern Territory Art Centre, New York to explore the garment district and Jaipur to gain understanding and experience in the block printing industry. In my final year all this amazing wealth of experience will be directed into my final 'Show-case' in which block printing on knit and linen will feature strongly.

Kathy attended our block print workshop in September 2016. You can find her on Instagram under llydkat56.
